Laundry

So....the washing machine here is ummm, interesting to say the least. The concept is quite intriguing because the single unit is both the washer and dryer.

The day we arrive Dan decided that I should be the one to "figure it out" because it would give me "something to do" (I should thank him once again for that). There are about 20 settings on the thing. Everything is written in English but it might as well have been Thai - I couldn't even figure out where to put the soap (they gave us a tiny baggie of what I assumed was powder detergent).

After determining that I was not going to figure it out on my own and no manual to be found we called the front desk and asked if someone could show us how to do laundry. The nice lady that came to show me how to use the thing did not mention that it would take a day at least to complete one tiny load of laundry....if you can really call the 3-5 items you can fit in there at once a 'Load'.

The laundry is in there for half the afternoon and every once in awhile the machine sounds like an airplane taking off - it is just like having a jetway in our very own kitchen!!! It really is impressive! Well, that is only the beginning - the cycle which is supposed to wash and dry leaves the clothes sopping wet. Then, the trick is to turn on just the dryer part - I can't tell you how many times while changing the setting more water ends up being sprayed on the already wet enough items - this is when I often curse at the rediculous machine.

Finally, at least 6-8 hours after a wash/dry cycle and at least 2-3 dry only cyles we have a few clean items of laundry to put away!

Dan sends out his work clothes or I would be doing laundry around the clock! He has about 2 months left, then he is back on laundry duty once we are home :-)

  1. Ooooo..... yeah.....

I had one of those at the house I owned before Amy and I got married. I *can* say that, while it worked, it was ideal for me. I bought it because it *was* small, and I didn't have a lot of room. It didn't use a lot of water, soap or electricity. I did laundry every day or every other day (I could usually fit a two to three sets of clothes in it), started it before I left for work in the morning, and it was done when I got home. I didn't have any problems with clothes not being dry, even with two sweaters, two long-sleeved shirts, and two pair of carpenter jeans.

It was great for about six months. Then it broke down, and no one in Ohio knew how to fix it. Well, that's not entirely true, but it took several (sometimes angry) calls to get a repair person to even show up at all, several visits to get it running at all, and it crapped right back out. I think I put it on the curb when I left, I honestly don't recall. Maybe I left it and the owner after me cursed at it, too.

Anyhow, since you're stuck with it, see if you can find the model number, then Google around for the manual. Maybe there's some way of increasing the length of the dryer cycle so that things are completely dry without you having to continually restart it. Failing that, you could always hang a clothes line in the living room :)
